Sevilla defender Kike Salas was arrested by police for deliberately earning yellow cards in order to influence sports betting results.
According to the Spanish news agency EFE, investigators suspect the footballer of deliberately trying to obtain a warning from referees so that bets placed by family members and friends in Spain would be carried out. The 22-year-old has received three yellow cards this season. Last year there were 10 yellow cards in La Liga.
The Spanish league told The Associated Press it would ask to participate in any legal proceedings against the player. Seville said it was aware of the arrest and was closely monitoring the situation. Salas’ arrest was first reported by El Confidencial.
