The Mexican Football Federation fined striker Gvadalahahara Havier Ernandes for statements about women on social media.
Officials deemed the player’s statements that “promoted sexist stereotypes” and “contradicted the principles of gender equality in sports.” To prevent such behavior, the Gender and Diversity Commission conducted an investigation.
Ernandez was fined a fine (the amount was not specified) and also issued an official warning to the striker, warning him of the possibility of a more severe penalty for repeated violations.
The 37-year-old striker is the Mexican national team’s all-time leading scorer with 52 goals in 109 matches.
