England national football players will not take the knee before the 2025 Women’s European Championship semi-final match against Italy.
Former defender Jessica Carter reported that she had encountered a significant amount of racial abuse. The official statement from the Lionesses reads: We stand with Jess and all Lionesses players, past and present, who have suffered from racism. No one should endure such disgusting abuse, whether in football or any other field. Representing our country is the highest honor. It is wrong that while we play, some of us are treated differently solely because of our skin color.
Until now, we prefer to take the knee before matches. Clearly, we and football must find another way to combat racism. We have agreed that the entire squad will remain until the match begins on Tuesday.
We hope the game goes ahead and see what else can be done. In the meantime, we will be fully focused on an important semi-final.
Meanwhile, as we know, the Football Association (England) is working with the British police and relevant authorities.
