A fighting draw.
Unusual level of resilience
Russian national team head coach Valery Karpin noted before the match:
The Nigerian stars haven’t arrived? Okay, there are no leaders, but other players who will come out today will be a serious test for us. And I really want this test to take place. To understand our level, to test the level of resilience that will come from Nigeria.
The Russians really haven’t had a serious opponent for a long time. In March, the team played against the national teams of Zambia and Grenada, and in 2024, they faced Syria, Brunei, Vietnam, and Belarus. And the difference between the points in these matches was cosmic: 32:0 (they were still 4:0 with Serbia, but the cards confused the early withdrawal).
Nigeria approached these goals perfectly (and the result is fitting). From the first minutes, a serious battle ensued. The “African Brazilians” tried to establish control of the ball and, during the loss, they immediately included themselves in the selection. The Russians didn’t give them time to make decisions, which made it difficult to advance the ball. The players tried to escape the pressure with one or two touches.
In their own half, Nigeria maintained a mobile defensive structure and personal orientations. As a result, the main booth performed far from the goal, for each shot it was necessary to cut off – and the Russians created the first opportunity from the corner.
Exchange of attacks
At 0-0, the teams were locked in a close battle, and the hosts succeeded in this fight. An attack on the flank took place, the circular shot was calculated, but the ball from Nigerian defender Rikochet flew into the goal. More importantly, the goal didn’t affect the quality of the game. The Nigerians maintained their structure and established possession, while Russia began to wait. At the same time, the game was opened up. In the first half, the Nigerians came extremely close to equalizing the score – a sharp attack, a shot on target after a corner. In the first instance, the guests had a real chance to score: Bashir broke into the program and ran to Melokhin, leaving 1 on 1 with the goalkeeper. On the back line, Matvey Safonov created a miraculous contrast – an ultramodern reaction allowed them to keep a goal on the castle. After the break, the initiative shifted to the guests. There was more space in the Russian half, and the Nigerians used it skillfully. In the opening minutes, the Bonifaces were on the rampage. Victor closed down the backcourt, but his shot went straight through the goalkeeper. Karpin closed down the striker, and found a way out.
It was especially difficult for Nikolai Komlichenko and later Ivan Sergeyev. Nigeria has rather high central defenders, which gave them an additional advantage in addition to their organized play during defense. One of the Russian national team’s key functions during possession was their casting in the final third. Maxim Osipenko played in the center of defense; the defender has excellent PAS skills and precise long-range passing—and his teammate was at the forefront. Karpin coached them in Rostov for a long time; it’s logical that attempts to use their game were evident in the national team. However, the difference in the affected dimensions rarely reached the forwards.
At the same time, the players always found their opportunities, and the activity of the insiders helped. Batrakov was the creative center of the team in this match. He saw the area perfectly and fell into step with the pace of the game. In the final third, the Rams opened up several times – at Dmitry’s end, there were two points of destruction at once (he drilled into the corner, then beat a fly ball close to the goal). In addition, another weapon was another long pass from Karpin – Karpin standards. Centerbacks Melekhin and Osipenko were regularly advanced towards someone else’s penalty at the corner and on a couple of occasions they got to the ball. On the exit, the national team’s center was disabled – but collectively managed to compensate for this.
The missed ball is curious, but there is a logic to it.
Valery Karpin’s services proved to be a good match. The Russians resisted the pace that Nigeria set and responded with precision. The same can be said for the level of resistance. Another thing is to maintain such intensity is not always. Drawing concentration was quite expensive.
The Nigerians took the first minutes of the second half, opening up space during the Russian national team’s defense. When the visitors took the ball to the kick, the gap opened up on the right flank, after which they created a clear corner. But here, the blocked ball occurred after a mistake. Matvey Safonov received the ball, but he passed it too weakly to the defender – Arokodar advanced an interception and punished the goalkeeper.
After the match, Danil also noted that the visitors punished the team for mistakes:
Good fighting game. Many moments were created on our doorstep and on Nigeria’s doorstep. I think everything Nigeria created was what we brought for ourselves. The team is strong, athletic, it wasn’t an easy moment. Again, if they hadn’t brought themselves…
For the Russian national team, a brilliant streak was interrupted. The national team has won eight games since 2023, with a record of 44:0. Today, the team failed to win for the first time—and failed to defend a goalless draw. On the other hand, it’s more important that the Russians finally faced a competitive opponent, which allowed them to assess their current level. If the reports of the friendly match with Argentina are confirmed, it will be another important milestone for the national team.
Russia vs. Nigeria
