Athletic’s leadership held a meeting with La Liga president Havier Tebas. He raised the issue of financial fireplain in the context of a possible move to Barcelona for midfielder Nicholas Williams. In its statement, the Bilbao club stated the following:Athletic would like to thank La Liga for its cooperation and clarity during yesterday’s meeting between the two organizations, which was attended by Javier Tebas and John Uriart, the presidents of each. The meeting in Madrid was held in response to Athletic’s request regarding compliance with financial fireplain rules.Among the issues discussed was the possibility of signing players. Athletic has a legitimate interest in accessing relevant information on this matter, given that Barcelona sporting director Deu has publicly admitted that he would attempt to sign a player from our first team. A player with a contract with Athletic until June 30, 2027.
The request for clarification on these issues helps ensure proper compliance with competition rules.
The DeCow’s comments follow public statements by Barcelona president Joan Lapates, who admitted that his club is “working on 1:1 compliance” and, therefore, does not currently meet the requirements of this rule to register players.
We are grateful to Los Angeles for their cooperation and clarity in providing a balanced response, but at the same time, we insist that Athletic will decisively defend its interests in accordance with the financial fairness rules approved by each of the professional clubs included in La Liga.
