An investigation into illegal betting on sporting events continues in Italy. The group of suspects has expanded and now includes 12 Serie A football players.
According to the Milan prosecutor’s office, between 2021 and 2023, these players may have been involved in betting on illegal internet platforms, as well as in online games such as poker and casino. Information about the football players’ possible involvement in illegal activities was obtained during an audit of their mobile phones.
The investigation uncovered a mediator—a Milan watch shop through which football players could repay debts to bookmakers, purchasing expensive watches.
Illegal bookmakers used the names of football players for advertising purposes, including Sandro Tonals and Nikolo Fajoli, who have long been under investigation. The updated list also includes suspects Weston McCanny (Juventus), Mattia Perin (Juventus), Angel Di Maria (Benfica), Leandro Paredes (Roma), Alessandro Florence (Milan), Nikolo Dzanyolo (Galatasaray), and others. It is important to note that not all of the suspects were involved in sports-related activities. Some of them were removed from the investigation due to their involvement in online gambling, such as poker and casino games.
